Gianni Rivera (born Giovanni Rivera in Alessandria – Italy - on 18 August 1943), is an Italian ex-politician and ex-footballer with the role of midfielder; European champion in 1968 and vice World Champion in 1970 with the Italian national team.
The first Italian player to be awarded the Ballon d’Or in 1969, he is considered one of the best Italian footballers ever and one of the greatest numbers 10 in football history. He debuted in Serie A (Italian top division) at fifteen with his hometown Alessandria team. Then he’s been playing for Milan team for 19 seasons (12 as captain). He was three times Italian champion, twice European champion, and once Intercontinental champion.
The eleventh player for the number of presences (527) in Serie A scoring 128 goals, he is the most prolific midfielder in the history of the Italian top division.

Between 1962 and 1974 he was in the national team playing 60 matches and scoring 14 goals. Having played in four World Championships, he is second in the Italian rankings behind Gianluigi Buffon; the same ranking as Enrico Albertosi, Giuseppe Bergomi, Fabio Cannavaro, Paolo Maldini, and Dino Zoff.

Rivera is at 19° place, and first of Italian players, in the special ranking of the best footballers of XX° century, published by IFFHS in 2000.
In 2004 he has been listed in the FIFA 100, list of the 125 best living players, compiled by Pelé and FIFA on the centenary of its foundation. During the same year, he resulted at 35° place in the UEFA Jubilee Poll, an online polling held by UEFA to celebrate the best European footballers of the previous 50 years.
In 2013 he entered the Italian Football Hall of Fame, and in 2015 he was among the first 100 athletes chosen by CONI (Italian Olympic Organisation) for the Walk of Fame of Italian sports.

In 1987 he started his work in Italian politics holding several positions in Parliament and Government.

Gianni Rivera was born on the outskirt of Alessandria, to Teresio Rivera and Edera Arobba. He obtained a secondary school diploma and started frequenting a technical institute, but he did not finish. His father introduced him to the football team in the town. With the Alessandria team, Gianni debuted in Serie A in 1959. The following year, not yet sixteen, he debuted with the Milan football team, where he played for all his career.
He was very popular among the football supporters, and was described as “handsome and clever”, “calm and ironic”.
During his career, he has often been polemical against the press, the football Federation, the referees, and the managers of the Milan team.
He managed an insurance agency, while still an active professional player. Later, in 1985-86 gave his name to a sportswear company.
When he quit playing, he was appointed as vice president of Milan, until 1986. After that, he started his political career as an MP for four parliamentary terms, also serving as Defence Undersecretary.
Rivera has three children (2 girls and 1 boy) from two women.
He has been honoured as “Commendatore all'Ordine al merito” of the Republic of Italy.

Rivera was nominated vice president of Milan AC when he left the football field and kept this position until 1986. During this period the team did not experience many successes and Rivera was described as way more brilliant as a player than as a manager.
In 1982 the company, close to bankruptcy, was bought by Silvio Berlusconi, a future political opponent of Rivera, who left his position after a while.
He then was responsible for the young players for the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
At 74, Rivera started attending a school for football coaches. After two years he obtained the ability to coach top-level football teams.

Rivera was invited (by the prominent MP’s G.Goria and B.Tabacci) to stand for the elections to the Italian Parliament for the Democrazia Cristiana party. He served as MP for different parties: DC, Patto Segni, Ulivo, and Margherita. He was also Defence Undersecretary under three different prime ministers (Prodi, D’Alema, Amato).
In 2005 he was at the European Parliament.
He proposed his candidature in the following years, though unsuccessfully.

- Commendatore al merito della Repubblica Italiana
«Su proposta della presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri»

- Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell'Ordine di Sant'Agata
